One of Britain's austerity reforms was the Welfare Reform and Work Bill 2015-16, supported by Iain Duncan Smith (Secretary of State for Work and Pensions) and the Conservative Party.

Harriet Harman, then deputy leader of the Labour Party, required Labour MPs to abstain from the vote for the bill as opposed to voting against it (a move which US-based magazine ''The Nation'' said "underline() Labour's moral and intellectual bankruptcy".)〔D.
